Oil Absorbing Sheets
For those of you with very oily scalps, I recommend you get used to removing that oil using Oil Absorbing Sheets or blotting sheets. One of the reasons why your scalp may be so oily is because you've overused soaps on your delicate head.
The blotting sheets are made of different materials like methylcellulose, rice paper or bamboo paper. I'm providing links here to purchase on Amazon, but they're available at every pharmacy.
Most people need to use 2-3 sheets in the beginning to cover the entire top of the head. The sheets are used to Blot, that is press up and down gently. Do not use them as wipes as you'll scratch the scalp and not really absorb oil. But as you integrate the other steps of this protocol, you'll notice that oiliness stops being a problem. That is because using too much detergent (body soap or shampoo) and never moisturizing are the main reason for the scalp being oily.
I posted this video on YouTube to show how to use it on the face and the scalp (with hair), but the same principles apply for the bald head.
The only difference is that you can place the entire sheet over the bald spot you'd like to cover. Once the sheet is visibly darker, you need to switch the sheet.

Moisturizer
The bald head is a difficult environment to protect. It tends to absorb creams at a slower rate than the face, so finding the right product to use may take a little trial and error.
That is why I'm listing here, the ones that most of my clients love and I have used for over a decade. They also won't break the bank so you will be able to keep the SMP looking sharp forever.
This step must be done twice daily, after every time you wash or wet your head and every time you trim your hair.
1.Merlot Day and Night Moisturizer
The Merlot Day Moisturizer is a very simple grape seed moisturizer with a very small amount of Zinc oxide. It's been in the market for 25 yrs.
There is an accompanying night moisturizer called Merlot Night Radiance. It's a lot richer with some high quality ingredients known to improve the skin barrier.
I always suggest to simply buy one of the two and try it twice a day.
If you're really committed to getting your scalp looking great overtime, you can buy the day and night creams and used them as suggested.
Unfortunately as of the writing of this article, they were unavailable on Amazon, so here's the direct link to the Merlot Skin Care website.
For those of you who travel by plane frequently, there is also a travel size Merlot Day found here.
2. Aloe Vera Gel
This is one of the best Aloe Vera gels in the market. As with most gels you want to make sure to use very small amounts to prevent the product to layer too heavily. It is made by one of my favorite brands Now Solutions.
As described in the video link below, I recommend this gel for people who still have some stuble through out the scalp. For those of you with some hair to style, it can also serve as a soft hold hair gel!
3. CoQ10 Revinage Serum
Some of you will need for a certain amount of time to use a more powerful product to help address potential depigmentation (light patches) and hyperpigmentation (dark patches). I have discussed how to use this product on the face on Instagram. You would basically follow the same instructions to use it on the scalp. Because it is a very concentrated product, you also have to learn to use very small dots and connect them all as I show in this video.
Here is a link for you to see how to use most moisturizers in between your SMP sessions.
Face and scalp cleanser
The reason this is listed last is because this will be what you do and use the least. Especially in between your SMP sessions. The scalp will go through a major exfoliation process on its own, so there is no need for you to continue being overzealous using a soap on your head.
I do recommend you switch to using the same product for face and scalp to make your scalp grooming easier to adhere to. So yes, please stop using your body soap or body wash as your face soap.
I have tried many different types of cleansers and I have found these two to be very effective.
This one is more concentrated. I recommend it for people who start off their SMP treatment with an extremely oily scalp.
This one is much gentler and can be used once your treatment is finished.
If you were not provided Oil Absorbing Sheets by Dr Andrea at the end of your first session, then you can start using this cleanser in between your sessions.
Trimming equipment
Once you have started your SMP journey, the best thing you can do to preserve each layer is to be gentler when you trim off excess hair.
In general I recommend switching from shaving with a blade to trimming with a small 1" wide clipper without the guard. By choosing a narrower clipper you'll be able to contour some areas of your scalp that can be more sensitive like the junction with your face, the neck and the junction with the crown.
Most importantly from now on you will reserve this clipper just for your head. Do not use it for any other body part.
If you become very disciplined with keeping the clipper clean, then you can use it to trim your beard as well.
Another option is a dual rotating shaver which is delicate enough for trimming excess hair and giving you a shaven look. Recently shavers with 5 rotating blades have appeared in the market advertised directly to bald men. I highly suggest you do not use them as they are extremely aggressive on the bald head and can fade your new SMP faster.

In the video, we also describe how you can clean the head gently using a skin toner with witch hazel.
If you're interested in trying this method, you can find many different types in your local pharmacy, but this is my favorite.
Normally you'd have to buy disposable lint free pads. Link can be found here.
If you had your Scalp Micropigmentation treatment done by another practitioner and you're not happy with your results, please don't hesitate to reach out.
