Jojoba oil, a gentle addition to your facial, scalp & hair products

Updated: Aug 9, 2024

Novelty is one of the main reasons many oils are introduced to the cosmetic space. The limited information on some of these oils doesn't justify why they're part of a formulation. Many times multiple oils are used in a product without regard for potential interactions. This can lead to irritation issues in someone with sensitive skin who could benefit from a specific oil, but at a much lower concentration than found in that commercial formulation.

That is why I favor the idea of adding jojoba oil to an existing product in an effort to personalize it for one's needs.

Jojoba oil is one of the safest oils for people with sensitive or flaky skin. It's a very lightweight oils that absorbs well into the scalp. It is also more sustainable since it doesn't have to be harvested from crops in isolated areas of the world.

This method does take a little trial and error, but it can lead to resolution of many issues since it's the only variable that's being changed. Rather than jumping to trying another product with a completely different formulation, one can optimize something that is giving partial improvements by adjusting the oiliness level.

This method works best for those who experience facial and scalp issues with the change of weather.

What this means is that your routine needs to be optimized for the challenging winter months.

Very few people would need to make this change in the summer. But if you are, please leave me a comment in this post.

If you're my client or have seen my videos on using foaming products for grooming the face and scalp, then you know that I am a big fan of three brands: Mother Dirt, Gallinee and Honey Pot.

You can add jojoba oil to either one.

Since each brand has a different volume, then what you need to add is a little different.

I recommend you add the oil after using a few pumps of the product in order to make some space for it within the bottle.

For Mother Dirt and Gallinee which have bottles with 100ml and 120ml, you can start with at least 5ml of oil (just under 1 teaspoon).

I have used up to 10ml with a full bottle and it still works very well.

Honey Pot has 170ml so you can start with 10-15ml (or just about 1 tablespoon).

You do not have to remove any volume of cleanser since we're not going for a perfect percentage.

After adding oil, mix the bottle well every time you're going to use it since some oil may rise to the top in between uses.

As you start using the foam with oil, you can slowly start adding more oil every 3-5 days depending on improvement. Start with 1-2ml (1 dropper full normally has 1ml) or you can start adding it drop wise (10-15 drops is about 1ml).

You should not notice major differences in the way the foaming cleanser suds, but you may notice after rinsing the face or scalp that it immediately feels less dry or irritated.

That is how you know you have reached the right amount of oil.

Some people can also do a gentle jojoba oil scalp massage overnight or for a few hrs before their next shampoo. Just make sure to use very small amounts of oil dispensed drop wise.

Alternatively, you can buy one of the scalp oil dispensers shared below to make the process more efficient. Most people can get away adding just 1-3 ml to the chamber rather than filling it all the way to the top. That way you're not leaving the chamber full of unused oil when finished. And you can load it with another scalp product if you need to.

Keep in mind that the prongs that come in contact with the scalp will need to be cleansed very well every single time. Otherwise, you run the risk of contaminating the prongs and making your scalp situation more difficult to manage. Simply use a small brush with soapy water to scrub the edge of the prongs and the internal rolling balls and dry them before storing.

Although this post is about Jojoba oil, there are a few more oils that can be used this way to improve both the face and scalp.

A post will come about those soon.
