At home trichoscopy

If you've worked with a trichologist or hair loss specialist, you may have seen them doing a microscopic inspection of the scalp. This is a very powerful way to assess what type of scalp issues someone is experiencing. It helps us be able to design treatments based on the texture and color of the scalp and any flakes that form. It allows us to see blocked hair follicles, scar tissue. It's also a quick way to check if any treatment you're doing is inducing new hair growth before that hair becomes macroscopic or visible with the naked eye.

Now you have a way to use a tool at home and share those images with your trichologist or hair loss practitioner if you're working remotely with someone.

Here's the link to the home microscope you can connect to a computer or your phone. Click on the picture or the link below.

If you're thinking of connecting it to a phone to be able to take videos or snapshots, you will need to download the application OTG view for Android from the Google Store. Unfortunately the microscope can't be connected to iPhone but it can be connected to Mac OS 10.5 and above.

A detailed description of the device can be found here.

Detailed instructions on how to use the software with your device can be found in this page.

Once you've successfully connected the device to a computer or phone, put the microscope flush with the scalp and start exploring yourself by going through the scalp looking for flakes, bumps, pimples, ingrown hairs or checking areas that are sensitive or very itchy.

Dr Andrea does not need to see dozens of images. Normally only 2-3 images of interest per area where you're experiencing issues is enough.

You may also capture a larger problematic area with video. Just make sure to part the hair very well so the video will only show the scalp.

Videos under 1.5 minutes show me enough details to make assessments.

If you're experiencing facial acne, eyebrow or eyelash flakiness or issues, please don't hesitate to explore those areas too.

I prefer to receive the images by email. It is perfectly fine and acceptable to send separate emails so you can label every email with the name of the area where the images where taken.

Please do not submit blurry or unfocused pictures.

Please forward all images to

Normally I will provide an assessment within 24 hrs of receipt of the pictures.

Any doubts or questions, simply send me a message.

Happy scalp exploring!

Here's an example of what a very flaky scalp looks like.
